Kim Van Horn

Managing Director, Paul M. Angell Family Foundation

Kim joined the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation in 2013. She serves as the Managing Director and co-leads the foundation’s Social Impact portfolio, which focuses on advancing equity in partnership with disinvested communities and marginalized people. Kim strongly believes that philanthropy does its best work when it learns from the leadership and expertise of grantee partners and when it embraces a comprehensive approach to complex realities.

Kim’s work in philanthropy is grounded in her experience as a social worker. Throughout her career, Kim has been deeply committed to addressing trauma and injustice. As co-director of an on-site domestic violence program at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, she worked to empower survivors of abuse and to improve the way Cook County’s health system identified and treated domestic violence as a public health issue.

She has previously worked at the Field Foundation of Illinois, Connections for Abused Women and their Children, and the University of Chicago. She has co-authored research articles that have appeared in Violence Against Women and other journals. In her free time, Kim loves adventures with her son and husband, cooking, gardening, long walks, bounce houses, and hosting small dinner parties. Born and raised on the Southeast Side of Chicago, she feels a deep commitment to the city and its residents.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the College of the University of Chicago and a Master’s degree from the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice.
