Emerging Family Leaders Learning and Action Cohort Overview 

The Emerging Family Leaders Learning and Action Cohort is an opportunity for emerging leaders to develop core knowledge about family philanthropy, connect and learn with peers in similar roles, and grow leadership skills. 

Beginning with an in-person learning experience and continuing virtually, this multi-session cohort will follow a curriculum designed to prepare and sustain emerging leaders through their family philanthropy leadership journey. Programs will include: 

  • Workshops on NCFP’s Family Giving Lifecycle curriculum
  • Education from experts in the field 
  • Time to network with other emerging leaders  

Come to learn about topics like refining philanthropic purpose, effective governance, managing conflict, decision-making, and more.

In-person components

Meet your fellow cohort members over dinner in Washington, DC.
 

May 22, 2025
Attend a day-long program inclusive of workshops focused on two modules of NCFP’s Family Giving Lifecycle and learn from experts in the field. Topics will likely include: 

  • The fundamentals of family philanthropy  
  • The principles of effective family philanthropy 
  • The role of family, its opportunities and challenges 
  • Rightsizing your philanthropic effort 
  • Family philanthropy governance 

Virtual components

Tentative dates for virtual meetings are:

  • July 17
  • September 25
  • November 20

Convene with your fellow cohort members over three hours and work through curricula of the Family Giving Lifecycle. Then, hear from experts and network with your peers. Topics will likely include: 

  • Managing conflict 
  • Best practices in decision-making 
  • Navigating succession and legacy 
  • Overcoming psychological barriers to giving 
  • Successfully engaging next-generation adults 

Expectations of Participants

Cohort participants are expected to participate in the in-person workshop in Washington, DC and three virtual workshops.  

Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their travel and lodging for the Washington, DC kick-off dinner and workshop on May 21 and 22.  

Eligibility

Participants must be: 

  • Young family members who are currently in a governing role (board member, committee member) and early in their leadership
  • Young family members who are currently in a governing role and want a refresher on fundamental family philanthropy content
  • Young family members who are currently serving as a staff member of their family’s philanthropy and would like to grow their leadership skills and fundamental family philanthropy knowledge
  • Young family members who are on a pathway to a governing and/or staff role in their family philanthropy

Application Process

Registration is a two-step process: 

  1. Before you register, please complete an application. This will allow us to verify eligibility and address any questions you may have on your application.
  2. Upon notification of acceptance you will receive an email with instructions on how to register for the program, including payment of the registration fee. 

Applications are due by April 3 and applicants will be notified of their acceptance by April 9. 

Applicant payment is due by April 16.

How much does the program cost?

  • $2,500 for NCFP members 
  • $3,500 for non-members 

Payment includes dinner on May 21, a full-day workshop on May 22, and three virtual workshops throughout 2025. 

What should I expect in the evaluation of my application? 

Applications are used to affirm applicants’ eligibility, understand applicants’ goals and interests, and answer questions that applicants may have. 

May I apply as part of a group from my family/foundation? 

Yes!

What is your cancellation policy?

We will not accept cancellations. We will accept eligible substitutions through May 15.
