Thursday, May 15, 2008     Shaping a Legacy Plan and Working with Your Advisors to Achieve It

Families who think thoughtfully about what they want to achieve with their wealth—either through their foundation, their personal giving or both—and who communicate that clearly to their advisors, will have more success in seeing their legacy fulfilled. Unless you develop a plan and share your vision,  your financial advisors may advise you to follow a conservative giving plan that doesn’t take into account your capacity to give or desire to go beyond just preserving wealth. Based on her book “Inspired Philanthropy, Creating a Giving Plan and Leaving a Legacy,” Tracy Gary will discuss how to develop your giving plan and partner with your advisors to unleash greater generosity.

Presented by Tracy Gary, Philanthropic and Legacy Advisor, Inspired Legacies, and Author, Inspired Philanthropy: Your Step by Step Guide to Creating a Giving Plan and Leaving a Legacy.

Thursday, June 12, 2008     Family Foundations and Advocacy: Making Your Grant Dollars Go Further!

Contrary to popular belief, family foundations may fund grantees to advocate—and can even advocate themselves. This session will provide an overview on the various activities that constitute advocacy and focus on why foundation support for advocacy is so important. It will then describe the legal rules governing such activity, explaining the types of activities family foundations may legally fund and those they may do themselves. Examples of why and how family foundations have supported advocacy, and the impact such grants had on grantees, will be provided.

Presented by Abby Levine, Foundation Advocacy Counsel, Alliance for Justice
